This recipe definitely takes banana bread to the next level! The inspiration came from co-founder Adam’s Aunt and Cousin. While living across the country to attend grad school, we sent Adam’s cousin some bags of banana bread mix to take with her. We were so excited (and surprised!) to get some pictures from her of our bread with chocolate mixed in like her mom used to make it. It looked so perfect, we had to try it for ourselves. The marbling took a little practice, but it was worth it! The final result is the most delicious and beautiful dessert. We know you will love it just as much as we do! The best part is that this loaf is perfect for sharing. The finished bread doesn’t have any ingredients with gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, nuts, or peanuts, so you can share with everyone!

Add the perfect chocolate swirl to your banana bread!

Ingredients

  • 1 Bag of Chelsea Approved Banana Bread Mix
  • 3 medium-sized ripe bananas
  • 2/3 Cup Neutral Cooking Oil (see notes)
  • 1/3 Cup Water
  • 1/3 Cup (60g) Vegan and Gluten Free Chocolate (see notes)

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 375F.
  2. Mash bananas in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add oil and water, stir until combined.
  4. Add all the dry mix to the wet ingredients and mix thoroughly.
  5. Melt the chocolate chips in a medium sized bowl (see notes).
  6. Pour about 1/2 cup of the banana bread batter into the bowl with the chocolate chips. Mix thoroughly to create the chocolate batter.
  7. Prepare a bread pan, either by lining it with parchment paper or by oiling it with cooking oil.
  8. Pour about 2/3 of the regular batter into the bread pan, and spread out evenly.
  9. Add all of the chocolate batter on top, and gently spread out.
  10. Pour in the remaining regular batter on top, and spread out evenly.
  11. Swirl the batter with a butter knife, making "figure 8" shapes 2-3 times around the pan (don't over swirl).
  12. Bake banana bread for 50-60 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  13. Remove from oven and let rest in the pan for 15 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  14. Enjoy!

Notes and Baking Tips

1. Neutral Cooking Oil: You can use any high heat oil, but we recommend Canola Oil, Vegetable Oil, or Avocado oil. If you are going to use Coconut Oil, melt it in the microwave and then let it cool for a couple of minutes.

2. Vegan and Gluten Free Chocolate:  Since the chocolate is melted, you can use any vegan and gluten free chocolate you want! For this recipe, we used 1/3 cup of semi sweet Enjoy Life chocolate chips. If you want a more savory flavor, use 60 grams of dark chocolate.

3.  Melt Chocolate: If you have a proper double boiler, you can use that. Or, if you want to melt it quickly, just add the chocolate to a microwave-safe bowl and heat it up in the microwave. Heat the chocolate for 20 second intervals, stirring in between to make sure it heats evenly.
